Zoos are a wonderful opportunity to see and learn about a variety of animals, particularly those that are native to Alaska. The majority of the time, visitors and animals are separated by fences and other safety measures.
This summer, however, you and your friends and family can get up close to some of Alaska’s most interesting animals.
The Alaska Zoo will hold live animals visits every Thursday throughout the summer season, from June 6 to September 5. Staff from the zoo will present various animal species. In previous years, the animals have included a red fox, moose, musk ox, porcupine, wolf pups, sea otter, and others. The staff will talk about the animals’ life, biology, and the importance of conservation.
The Alaska Zoo works to promote the conservation of artic and sub-artic species through education, research, and community involvement. The zoo is involved in programs such as the Species Survival Program for tigers and Polar Bear International.
Animal visits are scheduled to take place every Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Alaska Public Lands Information Center. The program will last 30 minutes. For more information, call 907-644-3661 or visit the National Park Service website and Alaska Public Lands Information website.
